Savannah’s Only AMI Preschool

Explorers Montessori Coastal Cooperative (EMCC) is a Montessori preschool located on Wilmington Island in Savannah, GA. As a preschool with a focus on Association Montessori International (AMI) curriculum, EMCC stands apart from other preschools in the area. AMI is a non-profit association dedicated to maintaining the integrity of Montessori education by remaining closely aligned with Dr. Montessori's methods and materials. Our Directress, Carly Greene, holds certification from the International Montessori Training Institute as well as a M.Ed. from Loyola University.

EMCC is accepting applications for enrollment for children between the ages of 2.5 and 5 years old. Our preschool offers full-day instruction consisting of two 3 hour work periods, as well as a half-day option consisting of one 3 hour work period. Your child may attend two, three, or five days a week (depending on availability).

Curriculum

Students in an AMI classroom are given presentations on materials in the following main areas:

  • Practical Life - Children learn to perform tasks such as zipping a jacket, tying a shoe, pouring water into a glass, etc.  Practical life lessons help children learn to take care of themselves so that they feel independent and less reliant on adults for basic needs.
  • Sensorial - Working with materials researched and developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, children explore differences in color and texture as well as organize objects.   There is no limit to sensorial lessons as every item in a Montessori classroom holds an opportunity for a child to develop sensorial mastery.
  • Language - Children will learn to speak, write, and read in a natural progression where reading happens spontaneously after learning phonetic sounds, tracing sandpaper letters, and writing.  In the writing stage, children learn to write in cursive first as the fluid movements of cursive writing come more naturally to children than block style writing.
  • Mathematics - Children will learn addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by working with materials that allow them to understand that numbers represent a specific amount and each operation is a manipulation of numbers.

The above are examples of what to expect from our classroom.  Children will learn from other areas as well, including but not limited to culture and music.
